DIARY OF AN ARTISAN

DEAR DIARY READERS
Today i commence the series that explores the travails of a writer and a musician and i would like to kick it off with a little good news: i sent this short story for the storried monthly competition and it is themed: MYSELF AS A MOVIE STAR. You might be seeing more of this allegory as we explore Nigeria in terms of its reception towards creative writers and Gospel musicians
BUT FIRST TAKE A LOOK AT THE LATEST SUPER HERO

THE ADVENTURES OF CHIKA
Let me tell you a brief story of Chika: the quintessential Nigerian super hero.
As a young man of 24 with no discernible achievement whatsoever in his life, Chika decided to take his fortune into the realm of the ethereal.
He went on a self exile on the lonesome mountains of Keffi in Nasarawa state for two weeks during which he ate nothing but fried grasshoppers and unripe fruits and drank from the not too clean stream in the valley. It was during this personal mind-voyage that he discovered what he wanted to do in life and decided to start immediately damning all rational consequences.
Few days later, he was ready to take his country by a storm. He had finally discovered his super powers: he could read the mind of people and convince them to do as he bid by looking into their eyes.
He knew the downsides of being a super hero, he knew the loneliness that comes with it and the freak-alert button he would trigger around people but he didn’t give a hoot about those anomalies, he just wanted to be part of something unique and outstanding.
His first contact with humanity after his personal exile was his mean and drunk landlord. He has just woken up after arriving at midnight only to be confronted by the yellow teeth and the sour wrinkled face of Mr Hamza.
“Good morning Sir” he greeted apprehensively
The next thing he knew, he was reading the thought of his Landlord
“Good morning indeed. I don’t know why I tolerate this loser in my house; all his fellow corper friends have traveled back to their states…does he not have parents?”
“Ehnn…Corper. Time don reach to pay light bill and the amount is 2000 naira per flat” Mr Hamza said
Chika knew the monthly charge wasn’t even up to 500 naira and he knew his fellow tenants often complained about Mr Hamza usually increasing rent and light bill so he could spend on his drinking.
He knew what he had to do.
Keeping his gaze trained on the bloodshot eyes of Mr Hamza he said
“The light bill from now on will be 300 hundred naira; any other charges you will pay from your pocket as a way of repaying the money you owe this compound”
For the next few minutes Mr Hamza remained quiet and Chika was getting nervous
“Maybe I have no special powers after all” he thought
Being a natural pessimist, he was already launching his apology when Mr Hamza nodded in concurrence
“Okay” he whispered as he turned to go
Even though he heard the voice that told of his new found prowess, Chika wasn’t ready for the cool feeling he got when it actually worked.
He could not resist the vain thought that popped up in his head the next seconds.
“Come back!” he ordered
Mr Hamza who was already on the way to his apartment turned and walked back with a frown
“What did you say?”
Chika wasted no time in restoring eye contact as he replied with a mischievous grin.
“I said from today henceforth you shall be responsible for washing the toilet and sweeping the compound”
Later that night as he packed his luggage, he reflected on the possibilities he could create for himself, he dreamt of mansions and cars. The next morning he was on his way to Lagos with no money in his pocket.
THE WORLD WILL BE HIS AND NOTHING COULD STOP HIM
LITTLE DID HE KNOW OF HIS ONLY MORTAL ENEMY
